There are many different calendar programs and they each handle events differently. As a result, we have designed two ways for learners to add events.
- Add events to calendar
- Manually add each event
Add Events to Calendar
When you create a new course, there is a default task during the onboarding curriculum section that requests learners "Add Events to Your Calendar". Clicking this task will open a pop out that will show all the upcoming events.
Any updates you make to the events in the course should automatically be picked up by the different calendar programs. However, the "refresh rate" depends on the platform. For example, Google Calendar only updates subscribed calendars every 12 hours.
The drawback of this system is that learners that leverage free/busy settings may have an issue in that a subscribed calendar is not automatically included in their free/busy calculation.
Manually Add Each Event
A learner also has the option of manually adding each event into their calendar. This might be used when a student can only attend certain events.
Any update to the event triggers an email being sent to all participants of the course with a NEW ICS file. This will update the old event. The advantage of this approach is that it generally works across the board for every calendar system. The disadvantage is that each event must be added one by one. There is no way to add all events at once due to the limitations of calendar programs.
