What This Does
You’ll expand your community by inviting new members through links, emails, or bulk CSV imports. You can also assign members to Community Groups and Community Subgroups, Products, Product Subgroups and Roles at the time of invite so members have the right setup when they join.
What To Know First
- Admin access required to invite to community; product manager or instructor access required to invite to product
- Takes about 5 minutes for a single invite; longer for bulk imports.
- Works for both communities and products.
How to invite members
The following options are available for inviting members to Disco. All are accessible from Admin > Members.
- Option 1: Use a shareable invite link
- Option 2: Send personalized email invites
- Option 3: Bulk invite with a CSV
Option 1: Use a shareable invite link
It is important to note that Community access must be set to Private for this feature to work as intended.
- Go to the Admin Area > Members and select “+ Invite”.
- Choose Invite link from the options.
- [Optional] To edit the link preview, go to Appearance > Cover Photo.
- Copy the link and share it with potential new members.
Option 2: Send personalized email invites
- Go to Members > Invites and select "+ Invite".
- Choose Email invite from the options.
- Select a role from the dropdown: Member, Admin, or Owner.
- Enter email addresses. Press enter after each one.
- [Optional] Grant access to groups or products:
- Add members to community custom groups.
- Assign members to products and select their role.
- Assigned members bypass all registration, including payment, capacity, or application.
- If you don’t want members to bypass product registration (i.e. you want them to pay for a product or complete an application), skip this step and proceed to invite Members to the community. Then you can invite Members to the Product separately.
- [Optional] Customize the invite message to make it feel specific to your community.
- Click Send Invites.
Option 3: Bulk invite with a CSV
- Prepare your CSV file with the following columns:
- first_name
- last_name
- community_groups (Notes: If adding one member to multiple groups, use commas to separate the groups in the same column. If adding to a Community Subgroup, note the Subgroup name, and the member will be automatically added to the parent group as well.)
- product1
- product1_subgroups (Notes: If adding one member to multiple sub-groups, use commas to separate the sub-groups in the same column).
- product2
- product2_subgroups
- To add users to more products and product sub-groups, add additional headings following the format above (.e.g product3, product3_subgroups, etc). If you do not want to assign users to products or product subgroups as part of their invite, you can leave these columns blank.
Please note that to add users to groups, products and subgroups, these must be created before your CSV file is processed, and the names must match exactly. We recommend you copy the community group, product or product subgroup name in Disco and paste it to your CSV file to ensure no errors when processing your bulk invite.
- Go to Admin > Members and select "+ Invite".
- Choose Bulk Import and upload your CSV file. Preview your uploaded file and click Upload File.
- [Optional] Customize the invite message to make it feel specific to your community.
- Select Send invites. We’ll process your file and email you once invites have been sent.
CSV Import Notes:
- You can download sample CSV files from Admin > Members > Invite > Bulk Import.
- You can import up to 1000 members to up to 100 Products at once using a CSV file.
- Your CSV file must include a header as provided in the example CSV file.
- Groups and product subgroups must exist in Disco before you upload your CSV. Copy subgroup names directly from Disco into your file to avoid errors.
- If a member already exists in Disco, their email will be skipped and they won’t be invited again.
Common Questions
I want to invite members to the community and assign them to groups or products. Which option do I choose?
Use Email invite or Bulk Import. Both allow you to add new members to groups and assign them to products and product subgroups when inviting. You can also add, change, or remove members from groups or products after inviting them.
Can I regenerate a shareable invite link?
Yes. When you regenerate the link, the old one can no longer be used. This helps protect privacy if a link is shared by mistake.
With email invite, can members be assigned to products with different roles in the same invitation?
No. All members in the same email invite flow are assigned to the same product with the same product role.
Can I bulk invite members to multiple community groups or product subgroups in a single CSV?
Yes. Members can be added to existing community custom groups or subgroups within products. Use commas to separate when adding to multiple groups or subgroups. Make sure the group name in your CSV matches exactly what exists in Disco.
How do I resend an invitation to someone I invited before but they haven’t accepted?
Go to Admin area > Members > Invites. Search for the email address and select “Resend Invitation” from the action icon (3 dots).
If I delete a community invitation, will it completely remove the user’s access to the community?
Users with active product invites can still join the community through those products. To prevent access and fully remove this user, go to the Admin > Members table and select “Remove Member” there.
